Voice over: The internet

<Super> The internet

[An arrow cursor clicks on ‘the internet’]

Voice over: The information super highway. It has become such an important tool in our everyday lives.

[A cartoon woman stands on a surfboard and surfs through the internet]

At home. At work. Even on holidays. Heads up!

[The same cartoon woman pops off her surfboard and into a kitchen, an office, on a beach all while working on a laptop. She bats a beach ball without looking up from her laptop]

Voice over: And thinking about life before the internet… Well let’s not think about that. But it seems like every time you try to… aww.

[A cartoon man searching the internet is distracted by cat videos]

Voice over: Something… HA HA HA!

[The same cartoon man searching the internet is distracted by a video of a skateboarding falling over]

Voice over: You find yourself getting distracted by 50% off all corduroy!

[The same cartoon man searching the internet is distracted by a pop up advertisement for 50% off all corduroy]

Voice over: One minute you’re researching the Amazon and before you know it you’re researching what’s on Amazon. So Sunsuper has decided to step in and do something about it. Why? Because much like your superannuation - for a great outcome all you need is a little nudge to keep you on course.

[The same cartoon man is laughing at a skateboarding video when a large hand pops into screen and nudges his chair putting him back on course with his internet search]

Voice over: Introducing the Procrasti-nah-tor. A helpful little browser extension that keeps you focused on what’s important.

[An example of the Procrasti-nah-tor browser extension appears on the webpage]

Voice over: Simply tell it how you should be spending your time and the second you begin to stray, like a tiny digital cattle prod - the procrasti-nah-tor will gently remind you to stop putting off what needs to be sorted.

[The same cartoon man is laughing at a skateboarding video when a large cattle prod pops into screen and zaps him putting him back on course with his internet search]

Getting on top of putting things off

Life admin. It causes most of us to say “La La La La La” – usually with our fingers firmly buried in our ear canals. Whether it has to do with work, or something as important as your sorting out your super, we always seem to set aside the seemingly irksome for the very last minute. The good news is there are easy ways to overcome this incredible desire to procrastinate, which are all explained in the helpful video below.

Show transcript

[Video opens on a park. Birds tweeting, light breeze rustling through trees. A man dressed in suit and tie walks along path and towards camera. He speaks directly to camera. He is our main character]

Main character: If you’re watching this, chances are you’re putting something off. You’re watching me and I’m watching you procrastinate. Or as it’s most commonly known…

[He groans loudly]

Main character: But, since you’re here already lets make it worth your while. The good news is, this universal behaviour is not your fault. Blame your brain.

[He stops walking]

Main character: You see, the old melon is in a constant battle between the pre-frontal cortex - the responsible zone and the limbic system - the pleasure zone which usually gets what it wants.

[He lifts his hands and reveals a banana in one and a bowl of banana split ice-cream with the other. After making his point he throws both over his shoulders and keeps walking]

Main character: It causes us to avoid the things that don’t bring us pleasure while easily distracting us with the things that do… and who is this majestic creature?

[He bends down out of view and stands holding in his arms a huge dog]

Main character: As I was saying, while you can’t make procrastination disappear - you can diminish it. Eliminate temptation entirely.

[After showing the huge dog in his arms with kisses he bends down out of view to place it on the ground]

Main character: Or set deadlines…

[His phone buzzes with a meeting alert]

Main character: which really help because they produce one of the most potent motivators known to human kind. Panic.

[He starts running frantically through the park]

Main character: That necessary evil that makes you feel really good once you overcome it.

[He makes the meeting and shakes everyone’s hands awkwardly before walking off down the office hall way]

Main character: Now what about those not so immediate things you always seem to put off? Things like your super. Your retirement could be decades away, years, months even and it’s not something you can simply sort out the night before.

[He narrowly misses the turn off into his office]

Main character: But it is something you can start to sort out right now, simply. With just a phone call to Sunsuper, you could be riding that sweet sweet wave to the future you want.

[He sits down behind his and mimics surfing a wave on his office chair]

Main character: Procrastinators, rejoice.

[Turns on his computer and starts laughing at a funny video]

Market Wrap April 2017

With Sunsuper Chief Economist, Brian Parker.

Market Wrap information

Show transcript

[Intro music]

<Super> Sunsuper Market Wrap, April 2017

[Brian standing in office]

Brian: Hi, I’m Brian Parker, and I’m the Chief Economist at Sunsuper.

<Super> Brian Parker, Chief Economist

<Super> How did Sunsuper perform over the March quarter?

Brian: Sunsuper’s Balanced option for Super-savings accounts produced a return of 2.7% for the March quarter, and a 13.1% return for the year ended March 2017. Longer-term returns remain very solid, with the Balanced option posting returns of 8.5% p.a. over the last 3 years and 10% p.a. over the 5 years to the end of March.

<Super> How have world markets performed and what’s likely to happen next?

Brian: World share markets in the developed world enjoyed another strong quarter, although a rising Australian dollar detracted from unhedged international share returns. After underperforming in the aftermath of President Trump’s election, emerging share markets rebounded over recent months.

Brian: The share market gains reflect ongoing optimism over prospects for the US and global economies. The Trump administration’s plans for significant tax cuts in the US have helped fuel this optimism.

Brian: However, we’re concerned that markets may have run ahead of themselves. Outside of the US, governments mostly remain either unwilling or unable to use their budgets to boost growth, so few are likely to follow the US lead.

Brian: Even with a Republican-dominated Congress, Trump is unlikely to be able to fully implement his economic platform. Fiscal policy may not be as expansionary as markets expect. And maybe it shouldn’t need to be. The US economy seems to be doing well enough without the extra help. Certainly well enough to allow the US Federal Reserve to keep raising interest rates. Any extra stimulus might simply add to inflation and force interest rates to rise faster than current projected.

<Super> What about Australia’s performance?

Brian: Here in Australia, our share market has also been performing well. Australian shares were best performing of Sunsuper’s major publically traded asset classes over the year to March, with a return of just over 20%. Banks and mining shares accounted for around two-thirds of that return.

Brian: While Australian shares performed strongly, the economy continues to grow at only a moderate pace. After posting only its fourth quarterly decline in 25 years during the September quarter, the Australian economy did recover in the December quarter. Low interest rates and the depreciation of the exchange rate over the past couple of years are helping, and export volumes have been growing strongly. Headline and core inflation rates remain well below the Reserve Bank’s target range, and wages growth has been very weak. This still provides the Reserve Bank with scope to ease policy if they feel it’s warranted. However, there is very little evidence that the current level of interest rates, the lowest in living memory, is holding the economy back.

<Super> What is Sunsuper doing?

Brian: While investment returns have been solid, financial markets still face a range of economic and political challenges over the coming months.

Brian: For some time now, Sunsuper has found few assets trading in public markets that could be described as genuinely cheap.

Brian: In this environment, the diversification benefits provided by alternative assets such as carefully selected hedge funds and our unlisted assets remain very attractive. They limit exposure to market volatility, and they allow us to build portfolios for members that tend to exhibit smaller fluctuations in returns over the short term, without compromising long-term expected returns.

Brian: The rebound in emerging share prices over recent months is particularly pleasing. We continue to view emerging share markets as being one of the few publicly traded asset classes that can be described as genuinely cheap, especially when compared to shares in Australia or the United States.

Brian: Sunsuper has investment options that are designed to meet the needs of a wide range of members. We offers members a range of 21 investment options to allow you to tailor your investments to your needs. And remember, if you’re invested in Sunsuper’s default option, the Lifecycle Strategy, as you approach and then enter retirement, we automatically and gradually reduce your exposure to growth assets such as shares. We do that to reduce the impact of market downturns on your investment.

Brian: As always, I’d encourage any of our members, especially those approaching retirement, to speak to one of our financial advisers to find out if the Sunsuper investment option you have is the right one for you. Please give Sunsuper a call on 13 11 84.

[Real Sunsuper members Jane and Peter take a seat on a big red couch]

<Super> Jane and Peter, married 29 years.

[In front of Jane and Peter is a large screen TV]

<Super> What does Peter dream of doing in retirement?

[The TV plays a pre-recoded video of Jane answering]

Jane: Pete’s always wanted to work on inventions.

[Sitting on the couch Peter shakes his head with a smile]

Peter: Not what I said.

[The video plays on revealing Pete’s answer]

Peter: An Iron Man, in an exotic location.

<Super> What age does Peter want to retire?

[The TV plays a pre-recoded video of Jane answering]

Jane: I would say Pete would like to retire in his mid 60’s.

[The video plays on revealing Pete’s answer]

Peter: Late 60’s, early 70’s.

[Sitting on the couch Jane laughs]

Jane: You’re presuming your knees won’t wear out.

Peter: I don’t need knees for you to push me around.

Jane: [laughing] Oh I see.

<Super> Where is Jane’s dream retirement destination?

[The video plays on revealing Jane’s answer]

Jane: Italy and France I think, yeah.

[Sitting on the couch Peter laughs looking surprised. The video plays on to hear Peter’s guess]

Peter: She would be wherever the family is really at the end of the day.

[Sitting on the couch the couple laugh together]

Jane: There seems to be a little bit of misunderstanding about me wanting to stay around the kids. I think we need to talk about that.

<Super> What would Peter change about his appearance?

[The video plays on revealing Jane’s answer]

Jane: I can think of no one I know that cares less about their appearance - so I would say the honest answer to that would be Pete would say look I’ll save the money, just give me the money. I’ll leave my appearance exactly the way it is.

[The video plays on revealing Peters response]

Peter: My left large toe.

[Sitting on the couch the couple laugh together]

Jane: Why did I not think of that?

Peter: It’s kind of bent, I’d like to straighten it.

Jane: Well let’s face it - it’s probably the only imperfect part of your anatomy.

Peter: You’re right.

[Intro music]

<Super> We all have songs that remind us of the past. But how many of us have a song that describes our future? We hit the streets asking people what song could be their retirement anthem.

[Video opens on a busy street mall]

Woman wearing sunglasses: My retirement anthem would be “I Want To Breakfree” by Queen.

Man sitting with his wife: “Endless love”. 53 years of marriage.

Woman with braids: The perfect song would be “Happy” by Pharrell.

Man wearing hat: The song I love is “What’s Going On” because I think that sums up life for me.

Woman with her kids: The retirement song would be “That’s The Way I Like It” by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Woman wearing glasses: U2 “With or Without You” [laughs].

Man in white shirt: “Another Day in Paradise”.

Woman wearing glasses: Because I am going to do things - with or without anyone [laughs].

Man wearing cap: I think that period of time would be “Walking on Sunshine”.

Woman in singlet: [sings] Hallelujah!

Woman in striped shirt: I’m definitely looking forward to celebrating my retirement so the most appropriate song obviously would be “Celebrate” by KC and the Sunshine Band.

Main in blue shirt: Straight away I think “Stairway to Heaven”. Worked hard, got my way out of here and I’m buying a stairway to heaven.

Woman in black singlet: My retirement song would definitely be “Go Your Own Way” by Fleetwood Mac.

Man in cowboy hat: Something by Slim Dusty [laughs].

Woman in grey shirt: “The Show Must Go On” by Freddie Mercury and Queen. That’s me!

Man in white shirt: The best song for my retirement day would be “Beautiful Day” by U2.

Woman in shirt: For me it would be Destiny’s Child “Independent Woman”.

Woman wearing silver hoops: Just doing what I like, when I like so ‘Freedom’ by George Michael.

Man wearing green shirt: Well I would say “Enter Sandman” by Metallica because who wants to go out gracefully? Should just go out raging until the end.

Woman wearing head-wrap: When I retire it’s going to be all about “Let’s Dance”.

[Woman in head-wrap dances happily on the spot]

Man wearing black jumper: When I think of something I wouldn’t want it to be - and that would be “Money’s Too Tight to Mention”.

It costs what???

It's hard to imagine how much things will cost when you retire. So we tried a little experiment to see how people would react to the cost of everyday items in 2045.

<Super> If you think the cost of living is high today, how will you feel in 30 years' time? We decided to find out.

[Video opens on a small convenience store where a camera is hidden up behind the counter]

Store attendant: $6.45 - do you want a bag?

Customer One: $6?

Store attendant: $6.45

Customer One: Are you sure?

Store attendant: Yeah!

[Customer One looks bewildered and shakes his head]

Store attendant: That’s going to be $15.

Customer Two: Sorry?

Customer Three: Get real [laughs].

Store attendant: $4.50 for the milk.

Customer Three: Really?

Store attendant: $28 bucks and 25 cents.

[Customer Four counting his coins looks up in astonishment]

Store attendant: $21 dollars and 30 cents.

Customer Five: Doesn’t sound right.

Store attendant: $13 dollars and 65 cents.

Customer Six: Are you kidding?

[Customer Six checks the item and the register amount twice]

Store attendant: Sorry?

Customer Six: Are you kidding [laughing]?

[Store attendant shakes his head very slowly. Customer Six does not look impressed]

Store attendant: $8.74

Customer Seven: Ah that’ll be $3.60 sorry?

Store attendant: $8.00 - $8.74

Customer Seven: Oh no, just for that.

Store attendant: Oh yeah, that’s what it is.

[Customer Seven looks around at the other customers lining up in disbelief]

Store attendant: $48.80.

Customer Eight: [laughs] Really?

Store attendant: Not good?

Customer Eight: I refuse to pay it.

Store attendant: Is that right?

Customer Eight: Yes it is. I’ll just walk out.

Store attendant: But now I’ll have to put this back myself.

Customer Eight: That’s right! You deserve it.

<Super> So will your super be enough in 30 years' time?

[Store attendant reveals to each customer the hidden camera and asks, will your super be enough in 30 years' time?]

Store attendant: So how do you think you’re going to go?

Customer Six: Terribly because I don’t work because I have children.

Store attendant: 30 years' time?

Customer Five: I don’t know [laughing].

Store attendant: You’ve got superannuation?

Customer Seven: Yeah I got plenty of money mate.

Store attendant: You’ve got plenty of money?

Customer Two: Well sort of, I am one of those people who’s got it everywhere. I think I have three super accounts which I am going to consolidate.

Store attendant: Three supers that you’re going to put together?

[Store attendant turns to the other customer]

Store attendant: What’s yours like?

Customer One: Down to one a week instead of one a day.

Customer Eight: Actually I’ve got my superannuation working for me and I’m thinking - that’s an awful lot. I’m not going to pay - I’m not going to fund yours Nick [laughing].

Store attendant: There’s just the camera up there. Say hello. Look at the camera, wave hello - we got you.

Customer Three: I’m so embarrassed!

Customer One: I looked at the bag, I was like holy shit [laughing].

Customer Eight: Thank you so much, see you.

Store attendant: See you in 30 years.
