Government benefits

The Government Age Pension is designed to provide income support to older Australians who need it. It can be used to supplement the income from your superannuation to help you to maintain a comfortable lifestyle in retirement.

How does it work

If you are eligible for the Age Pension, and your claim to the Department of Human Services to receive the Age Pension is approved, then you will begin receiving a fortnightly payment. How much you receive depends on how much other income you receive and how much your assets are worth.

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 66 years old (with your eligibility age depending on your date of birth)
  • Meet an income and assets test
  • Meet the residency requirements
  • You can learn more about claiming the Age Pension on the Australian Government Department of Human Services website. You can also phone them on 13 23 00 or visit your local Centrelink office.
