Cyber criminals prefer targets where they have a low risk of getting caught. Because of this, the volume of attacks on small businesses far exceed the attacks you read about in the news. The good news is there is a lot you can do to protect your business.
But who are these ‘cyber criminals’? First of all, they are not doing anything new. In fact, cyber criminals are everyday criminals with a fancy name. Yes they may use the internet or email to commit the crime, but the method of deception or theft behind that attack has been around for thousands of years. This is good news when trying to implement preventative measures because we all generally have a basic understanding of how to protect our homes and family from criminals. By introducing the same behaviours you apply to the rest of your non-cyber lives, you can increase the protection of your business also.
Here are three simple things you can do to prevent being a victim of cybercrime:
- Be aware – A common attack is known as “Phishing”. Phishing scams are attempts to trick you into giving sensitive information, generally over email but can be through any digital platform. Be aware of the information being requested and who is requesting it. You wouldn’t divulge sensitive information without good reason in your day to day life, so why do it without the same thought process digitally.
- Be organized – Make sure the devices you use have up to date patches and the passwords you use are not shared, or easy to guess. You wouldn’t leave your house in the morning with an open door, or leave your keys in a place that’s easy to find – you should take the same approach online.
- Be proactive – Take steps to prevent a cyber-attack in the first place. Train your employees on what to do if cyber-attack is suspected. We all remember the words our parents said to us and we say the same to our children regarding the dangers of the world. Do the same with employees and reduce the risk of being successfully attacked.
