Our executive team

The Sunsuper executive team is responsible for the day-to-day management of the fund’s operations and the implementation of the policies and strategies set by the board. Listed are the members of the executive team as at December 2016.

Scott Hartley – Chief Executive Officer

The Sunsuper Board appointed Scott as Chief Executive Officer in January 2014. Scott has had an extensive career in the superannuation industry with more than 15 years’ experience in executive management roles, most recently holding the position of Executive General Manager, Corporate and Institutional Wealth at NAB. During that time, Scott also held directorships with Plum Financial Services and Jana Investment Advisers.

Prior to that, he held several other executive leadership roles within the NAB /MLC Group, comprising strategy and marketing, institutional investments and financial planning.

Scott’s extensive industry experience and wealth of business knowledge makes him eminently suitable for the role of CEO and will ensure Sunsuper is well-positioned to realise its strategic ambitions and continue to grow its member and corporate client base nationally.

Ian Patrick – Chief Investment Officer

Ian joined Sunsuper in November 2015 as Chief Investment Officer. He and his team are responsible for the development and execution of Sunsuper’s investment strategy, dynamic asset allocation, and the pursuit of innovative investment opportunities - all while maintaining a strong emphasis on governance and maximising members’ returns.

Ian has more than 20 years’ experience in the institutional investment industry, most recently holding the position of Chief Executive Officer at JANA Investment Advisers, a role he held from 2008. Prior to that he was Head of Global Equities at JANA and has also worked for Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Alexander Forbes Consultants and Actuaries, and Ginsburg Malan & Carsons Consultants & Actuaries in Johannesburg.

Ian is an Actuary and holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is also a CFA charter holder.

Jason Sommer – Executive General Manager, People, Projects & Performance

As Sunsuper’s Executive General Manager, People, Projects and Performance, Jason is accountable for many of the support services that keeps the business performing optimally such as: the people management team and embedment of the organisation’s high performance culture; change and transformation, including the delivery of the Fund’s Future, State 2020 vision – a 5 year program designed to make hard things easier for members; financial management functions including management accounting, tax, actuarial and procurement; institutional and large corporate transitions capability; and investment operations and technical service functions.

Prior to joining Sunsuper, Jason was an executive within the Corporate & Institutional Wealth business of the NAB Group. During his 11 years with NAB, Jason held a number of positions including most recently General Manager, Change & Technical Services - a role he held for four years. Jason was also a member of the investment committee for the various NAB Group super funds - worth around $60 billion – and investment committee of the company’s advice and licensees’ board.

Jason is an actuary and has more 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry with much of his career spent in senior consulting, relationship management, product, project and technical services roles. He holds a Bachelor of Economics.

Teifi Whatley – Executive General Manager, Customer & Technology

Teifi Whatley is the Executive General Manager, Customer & Technology at Sunsuper. In her current role, Teifi is responsible for providing the strategic direction for the design and delivery of market-leading product and service experiences for Sunsuper’s customers through the organisation’s digital and technological capabilities.

Prior to that role, Teifi was the executive for the company’s Marketing, Customer Experience, and Insights and Analytics teams – a role she held for 15 years.

Before joining Sunsuper, Teifi had an extensive career in the broader financial services industry and has now spent more than 30 years working in senior marketing, customer experience and product roles in large institutions both here and the UK.

Michael Mulholland – Executive General Manager Advice, Marketing & Growth

Michael is the Executive General Manager for Advice, Marketing & Growth for Sunsuper and is responsible for leading the organisation’s Brand and Customer Marketing and Communication initiatives, as well the development and implementation of sales and distribution strategies aimed at attracting new employer clients and growing a network of aligned financial advice practices.

Prior to joining Sunsuper, Michael was with NAB Wealth for 17 years. During this time, he held a number of senior positions most recently General Manager, MLC Business Super – a role which he held for four years.

Michael has more than 25 years’ experience in the financial services industry with much of his career spent in management and leadership roles.
Michael Mulholland 

Terri Hamilton – Executive General Manager, Customer Engagement

Terri is the Executive General Manager Customer Engagement at Sunsuper. Terri and her team are responsible for ensuring Sunsuper’s customers enjoy an exceptional experience. This accountability includes Sunsuper’s Contact Centre, insurance underwriting and claim teams, benefit payment teams and support teams that keep Customer Engagement performing optimally.

Prior to her current role, Terri was the executive for Sunsuper’s Risk, Legal and Compliance Team. Terri has more than 30 years’ experience in the financial services industry including senior roles at MAP Funds Management, Suncorp and AMP. Terri is also an experienced company director including being a former director of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia, Ergon Energy and TUH health fund, a former trustee of QSuper and a former trustee of the Suncorp staff superannuation plan.

Terri holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma of Financial Planning.
Terri Hamilton

Lachlan East – Chief Risk Officer

Lachlan joined Sunsuper as Chief Risk Officer in 2012 and has close to 20 years’ experience across accounting and financial services. Lachlan is accountable for the Risk, Legal and Compliance business unit at Sunsuper which also includes security, business continuity, corporate facilities and the company secretariat functions.

Lachlan began his career as an accountant and spent more than 12 years working at international banking organisations predominantly in investment markets compliance roles based in Australia, Hong Kong and Japan.

Lachlan holds a Bachelor of Commerce, is a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia and an Associate of the Governance Institute of Australia.
