Our executive team
Sunsuper’s executive team is responsible for the day-to-day management of the fund’s operations and the implementation of the policies and strategies set by the board. As at 1 June 2016, our executive team is as follows:
Scott Hartley – Chief Executive Officer
The Board appointed Scott as Sunsuper’s Chief Executive Officer in January 2014. He has had an extensive career in the superannuation industry with more than 15 years’ experience in executive management roles, most recently holding the position of Executive General Manager, Corporate and Institutional Wealth at NAB. During that time, Scott also held directorships with Plum Financial Services and Jana Investment Advisers. Prior to that, he held several other executive leadership roles within the NAB /MLC Group, comprising strategy and marketing, institutional investments and financial planning. Scott’s extensive industry experience and wealth of business knowledge makes him eminently suitable for the role of CEO and will ensure Sunsuper is well-positioned to realise its strategic ambitions and continue to grow its member and corporate client base nationally.
Craig Neal – Chief Financial Officer
Craig joined Sunsuper in 2005 as Manager, Financial & Investment Accounting and has been a member of the senior management team over many years. He was acting Chief Financial Officer for six months during 2013 and officially joined the Sunsuper executive team in July 2014.
Craig is responsible for the financial stability of the fund, including budgetary and expense control. He ensures financial and tax regulatory requirements are met and provides the business with tax and financial advice to support decision making. Craig has close to 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry holding senior positions at Price Waterhouse Coopers and Colonial First State prior to Sunsuper. He has a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from University of NSW and is a Chartered Accountant.
Jason Sommer – Executive General Manager, Products, Projects & Technical Services
Jason’s current position is Executive General Manager for Product, Projects & Technical Services. Jason was appointed to his role in June 2014. Jason’s teams key priorities include providing a leading product offering for our employers and members. Successful delivery of our Future State vision, which includes a program developed to transform the business to provide a superior experience for customers.Implementation of an enhanced large new corporate fund transition capability as well as provide market leading investment operations and technical service functions. The above initiatives will help Sunsuper to deliver on their strategic objectives and secure long term success in the industry.
Prior to joining Sunsuper, Jason was with the wealth business for the NAB group. During his 11 years with the organisation Jason held a number of senior positions. Jason’s most recent role prior to joining Sunsuper was General Manager, Change & Technical Services, a position he occupied for 4 years. Jason was also a member of the investment committee for the various NAB Group super funds ($60b) and investment committee of the advice and licensees board of NAB.
Jason is an Actuary and has 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry with much of his career spent in Consulting, Relationship Management, Project and Technical Services roles.
Teifi Whatley – Executive General Manager, Customer Experience & Insights
Teifi Whatley is the Executive General Manager, Customer Experience & Insights at Sunsuper, one of Australia’s largest superannuation businesses.
She is responsible for positioning Sunsuper at the forefront of the industry, charged with providing strategic direction for the design and delivery of customer experience, brand and marketing, and digital capability.
Teifi has had an extensive career in the financial services industry with over 30 years marketing, customer and product experience in large institutions both in Australia and the UK.
Michael Mulholland – Executive General Manager, Business Growth & Advice
Michael is currently the Executive General Manager for Business Growth and Advice for Sunsuper. A role in which he was appointed in June 2014. Michael’s key focus is securing Sunsuper’s future growth through current distribution channels and also leveraging new opportunities within the market. A key priority will be the large Corporate sector which will provide a platform to secure Sunsuper’s position in the market whilst supporting the delivery of our strategic objectives.
Prior to joining Sunsuper, Michael held a number of senior positions for NAB Wealth over his 17 year tenure. Michael’s most recent role prior to joining Sunsuper was General Manager, MLC Business Super. A position he occupied for 4 years.
Michael has over 20 years’ experience in the Financial Services industry with much of his career spent in Management and advisory roles.
Ian Patrick – Chief Investment Officer
Ian joined Sunsuper in November 2015 as Chief Investment Officer. He and his team are responsible for continuing to execute the strategy of investing in a broad range of asset classes, dynamic asset allocation, and pursuing innovative investment opportunities, all while maintaining a strong emphasis on governance and maximising members’ returns.
Ian has over 20 years’ experience in the institutional investment industry, most recently holding the position of Chief Executive Officer at JANA Investment Advisers, a role he held from 2008. Prior to that he was Head of Global Equities at JANA and has also worked for Mercer Human Resource Consulting, Alexander Forbes Consultants and Actuaries, and Ginsburg Malan & Carsons Consultants & Actuaries in Johannesburg.
Ian is an Actuary and holds a Bachelor of Science (Honours) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. He is also a CFA charter holder.
Julian Carroll – Executive General Manager, Information, Solutions and Technology
Julian joined Sunsuper in 2011 bringing more than 30 years’ experience to the role. He has held a variety of senior management positions in both private and public sector companies, including General Manager roles with Suncorp and the Chief Information Officer for the Department of Main Roads, Queensland. Julian is responsible for leading Information, Solutions and Technology for sustainable daily operations and for initiatives to prepare Sunsuper for the future, in line with Sunsuper’s strategic objectives.
Terri Hamilton – Executive General Manager, Risk, Compliance & Legal
Terri joined Sunsuper’s Compliance team in 2009 and has over 29 years’ experience in the financial services’ industry. Terri has a broad industry experience including senior roles at MAP Funds Management, Suncorp and AMP. Terri is also an experienced company director including being a former director of the Association of Superannuation Funds of Australia and a former trustee of QSuper. Terri holds a Bachelor of Laws and a Diploma of Financial Planning.
Steven Travis – Executive General Manager, Customer Service and People
Steven joined Sunsuper in 2005 as Manager of Financial Advice where he was instrumental in the design of Sunsuper’s advice model. In 2010 he joined the Sunsuper executive team, and is focussed on leading the member and employer service teams to deliver industry-leading customer service and engagement strategies.
Steven has previous experience as a financial planner, a portfolio analyst, and an investment accountant. Steven holds a Bachelor of Business (Accountancy), a Masters of Applied Finance, a Masters in Organisational Leadership, and is a certified financial planner (CFP).
Andrea Forbes – Executive General Manager, Strategy, Education, and External Relations
Andrea was appointed to the executive team in February 2015 and is responsible for overseeing Sunsuper’s long-term business strategy, as well as the development and delivery of advocacy programs for the company’s key external stakeholders, including government bodies and industry associations. She also oversees the development and provision of effective and innovative workplace education solutions for the Fund’s clients (and their employees) as well targeted programs of communications to employer associations and financial advisers. Andrea came to Sunsuper with a long history in the industry having worked as Deputy Chief-of-Staff to both Bill Shorten and Chris Bowen, in which she played a key role in delivering a range of super and financial services reforms, including MySuper, the low income super contribution, and FoFA. Prior to that, Andrea spent seven years in the corporate strategy area of NAB and MLC and has also worked as an economist at Salomon Smith Barney and the Australian Treasury. She has a Bachelor of Economics (Hons) and has completed the AICD Company Directors Course.
