In Australia, superannuation generally cannot be accessed before you are at least 55 years old, however there are some exceptions that apply under special circumstances.

Early access to super may be possible:

• in cases of severe financial hardship;
• on compassionate grounds;
• if you suffer permanent incapacity;
• if you have a terminal medical condition [PDF 278KB];
• in the event of death [PDF 331KB];
• if you are a temporary resident permanently leaving Australia;
